Taking the pen tool seriously

Most of my work has focused on either user interface elements, web designs, or print layouts. My general lack of drawing ability has forced most of that work toward the geometric and the typographic. More recently, however, I’ve begun to take the pen tool more seriously, creating my own illustrations.

This particular piece was created over several days as I came to grips with the pen tool, which I’ve always used, but never mastered. I drew it from life and originally intended to render it, but I ended up liking the linework instead.

Not-so-subtle inspiration

Inspired by this set of posters by Josef Müller Brockmann, I designed this poster when Girl Talk came to my school.

The hat of Anna Moï

Author and fashion designer, Anna Moï was sponsored by Oberlin College to give a talk on immigration and world-literature in France.

This product of a last minute request by the client was conceived and delivered in just a few hours.

An evening of chamber music

The assignment was to design a program that would minimize unnecessary opening and folding during the performance. My solution was to create a single-fold program that listed the contents of the performance in the inner fold and details on the outer fold.

Illustrations were sourced and scanned from various encyclopedias of musical instruments.

Rethinking clam juice

Tasked with redesigning the packaging of an existing product, I designed this wraparound label for Sclafani Clam Juice. I used illustrations over photographs in order to make the product more palatable.
